The untimely death of electronica and subsequent resurrection of postcard records
Perhaps a sign of the times? Is the premature death of electronic music and the rise of the old two-and-a-half-minute (alternatively 12 minute) indie 7" already upon us? In the February issue of Mojo magazine, the mag for people who don't joke around when it comes to the Traveling Wilburys, published (what they consider to be) the 50 greatest UK indie records of all time. Not a bad list all in all. It's nice to see a heavy representation from Postcard Records(Aztek Camera, Orange Juice), also interesting, and somewhat supriseing to see "Forever Breathes The Lonely Word" by Felt on number 11 (Of course featuring the most excellent single "All the people I like are those that are dead").. Also great to see Spacemen3 finally getting (some of) the recognition they deserve. A well deserved #2 spot for TJ&MC (reported to be in the studio recording a new album after the reconsiliation of William and Jim)..
Some bands I feel could have been left out, like some of the quintessential NME hype band such as Arctic Monkeys (#7, give me a break..), Hey - why not put these animal men and S*M*A*S*H on there too.. And although it's cool to pick a really old (1986) single release from Primal Scream - Crystal Crescent/Velocity Girl, everything on Screamadelica is imo more classic and defenently deserves a (high) place on the list.
It's also kinda strange they completely left out Slowdive, Verve, Suede and even Manics.. But perhaps it's a question on weather to define indie from a business/label perspective rather than the attitude..?
Anyway, ze list:
